Now, let’s dive into the heart of Cebu and uncover the best things to do, places to visit, and hidden gems that will make your trip an unforgettable experience. Discover all the best things to do and places to visit if you’re planning to travel to Cebu.

Things to Know

Cebu is a land of diverse experiences, but before you embark on your adventure, here are some essential tips to enhance your travel experience. The official currency is the Philippine Peso (PHP), and while credit cards are widely accepted, it’s wise to carry some cash, especially in more remote areas. English is widely spoken, making communication easy, and the local outlets follow Type A and Type B electrical standards, so don’t forget your travel adapter.

Cebu has a tropical climate, so lightweight and breathable clothing is a must. Pack comfortable walking shoes, swimwear for beach activities, and modest clothing for visits to religious sites. Don’t forget to include a light jacket or sweater for cooler evenings. Dress comfortably in the tropical climate, with lightweight clothing, swimwear for beach days, and modest attire for visits to religious sites.

The ideal time to visit Cebu is during the dry season, which typically runs from November to April. This period ensures pleasant weather for outdoor activities and exploration. However, be aware that this is also the peak tourist season, so plan and book accommodations in advance to secure the best options.

U.S. citizens can enter the Philippines for tourism purposes without a visa for stays of up to 30 days. However, visa requirements can change, and it’s crucial to check the latest information from official sources or the Philippine embassy before your trip. Remember that visa regulations may vary depending on your nationality, so always conduct thorough research well in advance.

Transportation

Getting to Cebu:

Your Cebu adventure begins the moment you touch down at Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB). Situated on Mactan Island, this modern airport serves as the main gateway to the province. From the airport, you can easily reach Cebu City, the bustling hub of the region, by taking a taxi, airport shuttle, or a rideshare service. The journey provides a glimpse of the urban and scenic beauty that awaits you in Cebu.

Getting Around Cebu City:

Cebu City offers a range of transportation options to explore its vibrant streets. Taxis and Grab rideshare services are readily available, providing convenient and comfortable ways to navigate the city. For a more budget-friendly option, try the local jeepneys—colorful, converted jeeps that follow specific routes around the city. They offer a unique cultural experience and are a favorite among budget-conscious travelers.

Traveling from Cebu City to Moalboal:

Moalboal, known for its stunning beaches and vibrant marine life, is approximately a 2.5 to 3-hour drive from Cebu City. Several transportation options are available for the journey:

  1. Bus: Public buses, both air-conditioned and non-air-conditioned, operate from Cebu South Bus Terminal to Moalboal. The journey allows you to enjoy the picturesque landscapes along the way. This was the option I took as it was convenient to get a ticket on the day of at the station. The frequency of buses can vary, with departures typically available every 30 minutes to an hour during peak times. It’s advisable to check the current bus schedule at the terminal or inquire with locals for the most up-to-date information.

  2. Private Car: For a more comfortable and flexible option, consider hiring a private car or van. This is especially convenient if you’re traveling with a group or carrying a lot of luggage.

  3. Rental Car: Renting a car gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace. It’s advisable to check the local traffic rules and road conditions before opting for this mode of transportation.

  4. Taxi or Rideshare: Taxis and rideshare services can be hired for a direct and hassle-free journey to Moalboal. Negotiate the fare in advance if you choose a taxi.

Once in Moalboal, tricycles (motorcycle with a sidecar) and habal-habal (motorcycle taxis) are common modes of local transportation, providing easy access to various attractions and activities in the area.

Scooter rental shops are prevalent in Moalboal, and the cost is usually around PHP 300 to PHP 500 per day. Keep in mind that some rental shops may require you to leave your passport as a deposit, so be prepared as they will not take a copy.

With these transportation options at your disposal, you can seamlessly traverse the vibrant streets of Cebu City and venture to the breathtaking shores of Moalboal, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable travel experience.

Day One:

Travel to Cebu

Welcome to Cebu! After landing at Mactan-Cebu International Airport, I headed to my accommodation, Islands Stay Hotels Mactan, conveniently located near the airport. This budget-friendly hotel provided a comfortable and convenient place to sleep since I landed late at night. Once I picked up my luggage, got money out of the ATM, and purchased a local SIM Card, I ordered a ride to the hotel on the Grab app. This is the best ride-sharing app to use in the city – but it isn’t used in other parts of the island. If you arrive earlier in the day, you can start exploring the city.

Day Two:

Cebu City

I started the day with cultural exploration around Cebu City. Often referred to as the “Queen City of the South,” Cebu City is a dynamic metropolis that blends rich historical heritage with modern urban living. As the oldest city in the Philippines, Cebu boasts a vibrant tapestry of culture, evident in its colonial-era landmarks like Fort San Pedro and the Basilica Minore del Santo Nino. The city is a bustling hub of activity, featuring lively markets, diverse culinary delights, and a vibrant nightlife scene.

Beyond its urban charm, Cebu City serves as a gateway to the picturesque landscapes of the province. So after exploring the cityin the morning, I went back to my hotel to collect my luggage and then headed to Cebu South Bus Terminal to catch a bus to Moalboal in the afternoon.

Taoist Temple

Perched atop the Beverly Hills Subdivision in Cebu City, the Taoist Temple is a captivating haven that reflects the rich tapestry of Chinese culture and philosophy. To reach the temple, take a taxi or a private car. Admission is free, and the temple is generally open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Dress modestly, and respect the temple’s customs, such as refraining from taking photos inside the prayer halls. I enjoyed the panoramic views of Cebu City below, creating a moment of tranquility amid bustling city life.

Fort San Pedro

Nestled in the heart of Cebu City, Fort San Pedro stands as a living testament to the city’s storied past and Spanish colonial influence. Located on Pigafetta Street, it is easily accessible by walking from various points in the city. The entrance fee is about $2-3. The fort is open daily from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM. Visiting Fort San Pedro was like stepping back in time; the ancient cannons, tranquil courtyards, and panoramic views of Cebu’s port provided a fascinating journey through the city’s colonial past.

Basilica Minore del Santo Nino

Situated at Osmeña Boulevard, the Basilica Minore del Santo Nino is the oldest Roman Catholic church in the Philippines. While entry is free, donations are appreciated to support the church’s maintenance. The basilica is open daily from 6:00 AM to 7:00 PM. Its architectural grandeur and historical relics, including the revered Santo Nino image, make it a focal point for both pilgrims and tourists. You can attend the lively Sunday Mass for a cultural experience.

Heritage of Cebu Monument

Located at the corners of P. Burgos and Osmeña Boulevard in Cebu City, the Heritage of Cebu Monument depicts the history of Cebu and its important events.

Bus to Moalboal

To get to Moalboal, head to the Cebu South Bus Terminal, situated along Natalio Bacalso Avenue in Cebu City. Identify buses destined for Bato via Barili or Bato via Moalboal, signaling their route through Moalboal. I just went to the counter and told them I was going to Moalboal and there were no issues. Purchase your ticket from the terminal’s counters, typically priced around PHP 120-150. Head to the designated area where buses bound for Moalboal are stationed. Keep in mind that bus schedules may vary, but they generally operate from early morning to late afternoon. You can store your larger luggage under the bus. Settle in for a scenic 3 to 4-hour journey, relishing the picturesque views of Cebu’s countryside and coast. The bus will drop you off at the Moalboal Bus Stop in the town center. From there, tricycles can take you to your accommodation.

Last Filling Station

After I checked into my hotel at Marcosas Cottage Resort, I went out to find some food. Just a 3-minute walk away I found the Last Filling Station Restaurant. The restaurant serves both Filipino delicacies and international dishes. The convenience of its proximity to my accomodation made it an ideal choice for a late-night dinner.

Chili Bar

After dinner, I wandered around and ended up at Chili Bar, which is the best place to go in Moalboal for a drink. I ended up here almost every night. I love the music and lively ambiance. The cocktails aren’t too bad either. Whether you’re in the mood for a laid-back evening or ready to dance the night away, Chili Bar caters to diverse tastes, making it a dynamic addition to Moalboal’s nightlife scene.

Day Three:

Moalboal

If you go to Cebu, I highly recommend spending majority of your time in Moalboal. By basing yourself in Moalboal, you position yourself at the epicenter of adventure, relaxation, and natural beauty, creating a well-rounded and unforgettable experience in this tropical paradise.

Moalboal is a picturesque coastal town renowned for its vibrant marine life, pristine beaches, and captivating natural wonders. Boasting crystal-clear waters, Moalboal has become a diver’s paradise, drawing enthusiasts to explore its colorful coral reefs and witness the famed Sardine Run. Panagsama Beach, a hub for divers, offers lively bars and restaurants, creating a lively atmosphere.

Panagsama Beach

Panagsama Beach is a lively spot known for its vibrant atmosphere and diverse marine life. Various shops and restaurants line the shore. Bring snorkeling gear to explore the nearby coral reefs or rent equipment from the local shops. The beach was within walking distance from my hotel, which I definitely advise.

Sardine Run

The Sardine Run is a natural spectacle where massive schools of sardines create breathtaking formations underwater. No need to hire a local boat or go on a tour since they are just off the shore. Go early in the morning for the best visibility and fewer crowds. Swimming surrounded by a sea of shimmering sardines was an unforgettable encounter with nature.

Marina Cucina

After my morning at the beach, I went looking for somewhere to eat. I ended up at Marina Cucina, a small Italian restaurant in town. They also offer a lot of fresh seafood options. The staff was friendly and the glass of wine was the perfect touch to my meal.

Basdaku White Beach

Basdaku White Beach is a pristine stretch of white sand along the Moalboal coastline. It’s accessible by tricycle from Panagsama Beach or you can rent a scooter and get there yourself for super cheap. Be on the lookout for starfish!

Ohlala Restobar

For dinner, I really wanted to try local lumpia. This is a famous Filipino dish that can’t be missed! I gave this place a try because I loved the family-run business feel to it. Their menu isn’t lengthy, but if you’re not that hungry, this is the place to go.

Day Four:

Oslob

Embarking on an early adventure, I took a tour to Oslob for a captivating whale shark encounter, a surreal experience swimming alongside these majestic creatures. This is definitely a bucket list experience and Cebu is the best place to do it! Afterward, I visited the Tumalog Waterfalls, where the cascading waters created a refreshing oasis amid lush greenery.

Oslob is approximately 117 kilometers (about 73 miles) southeast of Cebu City. The journey takes around 3-4 hours by car, depending on traffic conditions. From Moalboal, Oslob is around 70 kilometers (about 43 miles) to the northeast. The travel time is approximately 2-3 hours by car.

While it’s possible to explore Oslob independently, booking a guided tour is highly recommended for several reasons. Tour operators are well-versed in local regulations and environmental guidelines, ensuring a responsible and sustainable encounter with whale sharks. Additionally, tours often include transportation, permits, and experienced guides, streamlining the overall experience and providing valuable insights into Oslob’s natural and cultural heritage.

Tumalog Waterfall

Oslob Whale Sharks

Oslo is famous for its whale shark encounters. To get there from Moalboal, it is best to join a guided tour. It can be booked in advance or the day prior from local travel agencies. The whale shark encounter usually starts early in the morning. I was picked up around 5AM and was in the water around 8AM. Be sure to follow guidelines to ensure a responsible and sustainable encounter. My personal experience swimming alongside these gentle giants in Oslob was surreal; the sheer size and grace of the whale sharks left me in awe.

Tumalog Waterfalls

After the whale shark encounter, a visit to Tumalog Waterfalls is a refreshing way to continue the day. My tour package included transportation to the falls. Wear sturdy footwear for the trek to the falls. You can choose to pay a local to take you down the road on scooter if you wish. I loved swimming in the falls!

After the waterfalls, the driver took me to a local restaurant overlooking the ocean before heading back to Moalboal by 3PM. Of course I had to take a photo on the bird’s nest with the beautiful turquoise water behind me.

Andi's Talisay

Moalboal had a few good places to have a drink. Right on the beach is Andi’s Talisay, a laid-back bar with a decent cocktail menu. With my feet in the sand and a refreshing drink in hand, this was the perfect way to end the evening. I also recommend going here around sunset.

Day Five:

Kawasan Falls

If you’re like me and love to participate in adventurous activities, then you have to go on an exhilarating canyoneering tour to Kawasan Falls where you will navigate through natural water slides, cliff jumps, and lush canyons. The turquoise waters of Kawasan Falls provide a serene and picturesque backdrop, making it an unforgettable day of adventure.

cebu canyoneering

Canyoneering Tour

The Kawasan Falls Canyoneering Tour was the highlight of my Cebu trip! The half-day adventure is not far from Moalboal, which is even more of a reason to stay in Moalboal during your time in Cebu. During the exciting tour, you will navigate the Matutinao River on a canyoneering adventure, complete with a Tarzan swing, jumps at the falls, and rock slides. The package includes a knowledgeable guide, helmet, and life jacket—just bring your waterproof shoes.

Before going to the river, you will have the option of taking a zip-line for an extra fee at Aerial Adventures, which I opted to take. I also bought a waterproof phone case from a local lady selling them as we arrived. My guide took lots of pictures and videos for me. After the adrenaline-filled escapade, the group was recharged with a home-cooked Filipino lunch at the owner’s home.

Veranda Restaurant and Bar

Another great restaurant that I recommend in Moalboal is Veranda Restaurant and Bar. This makes a great date-night location with its candle-lit tables right by the ocean. The waves provide a soothing soundtrack to an evening filled with romantic vibes and culinary delights. If you’re seeking a place for a special evening with a loved one (or even solo like myself), where the ambiance is as exceptional as the seafood, Veranda is the best option.

Day Six:

Osmena Peak

Venturing into the mountains, I hiked to Osmena Peak, the highest point in Cebu, which typically offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. However, it was a very foggy day so unfortunately I didn’t see much.

On a clear day, you can see the ocean

Osmena Peak

To reach Osmena Peak from Moalboal, hire a tricycle or rent a scooter. If you rent a scooter, be sure to put your GPS in car mode because there are a lot of off-road trails that the GPS will route you through that definitely aren’t suitable for tourists who aren’t familiar with the area. To reach the peak, you will need to go with a guide, which is included in the entrance fee. I didn’t like this because it definitely wasn’t necessary and I prefer to explore on my own. The hike is only about 20-minutes up and 15-minutes down. I recommend going early to witness a stunning sunrise, but I prefer to sleep in when I’m on vacation.

Evening at the Beach

I spent almost all of my evenings relaxing at the beach with my toes in the sand and a drink in my hand. The sunsets in Cebu are gorgeous and definitely something that I enjoyed watching. It’s a peaceful way to end the day. Keep an eye out for sea turtles poking their heads up!

Day Seven:

Beach Day

Taking a break from traveling around, I dedicated this day to pure relaxation on Moalboal’s beautiful beaches. Whether basking in the sun, snorkeling in the crystal-clear waters, or enjoying a beachside massage, be sure to take a day to unwind and soak in the tropical paradise.

Snorkeling

On my final day, I explored the underwater world of Moalboal further where I encourtered sea turtles, water snakes, and a kaleidoscope of vibrant marine life. A word of caution: tread lightly to preserve the delicate coral ecosystems beneath you. I love that I was able to snorkel right from the shore. Snorkel equipment is readily available. Simply hand over your hotel key or ID at local rental shops if you didn’t bring your own.

Lantaw Restaurant

My favorite restaurant in Moalboal is by far Lantaw. It was so good that I actually ate here twice. What sets it apart isn’t just its incredible menu, but also its perfect location. Go up to the second floor for a great view of the beach. I’m a sucker for a great view! While I ate, I was treated to a dramatic lighting show as a storm passed by. It was actually super neat to watch. Right before it came through, there was a beautiful sunset!

Hotel Poolside BaR

I booked a hotel with a pool, so might as well take advantage of it. The poolside bar was the perfect way to end my day. Nothing is better than having a few drinks by the pool and then walking right to your room afterwards.

Day Eight:

Depart Cebu

To return to Cebu City from Moalboal, I took a bus from Moalboal Bus Stop. Buses run regularly throughout the day, and the journey takes approximately 3 hours. Tickets can be purchased at the bus stop, and no advance booking is required. You can opt to pay more for an air-conditioned bus for a more relaxed journey, although you may have to wait longer. I decided to take the first bus available, which didn’t have AC, but the windows were open so I didn’t get hot. Once back in Cebu City, I got a taxi to the airport for my departure.

Final Thoughts

I had unforgettable journey through Cebu with so many cherished memories and a profound appreciation for the diverse wonders this tropical paradise has to offer. From the vibrant cityscape of Cebu City, rich with historical gems and cultural treasures, to the breathtaking landscapes of Moalboal, with its underwater adventures and serene beaches, every moment in Cebu felt like a page from a captivating travel novel. The exhilarating canyoneering at Kawasan Falls, the awe-inspiring encounters with sea turtles, and the immersive cultural experiences have etched themselves into the tapestry of my travels. I can’t wait until I can visit the Philippines again!

Here are five additional things to do or places to see in Cebu that you might consider if you have more time:

  1. Bantayan Island: Known for its pristine beaches and crystal-clear waters, Bantayan Island is a tropical paradise off the northern coast of Cebu. Relax on the powdery white sand beaches of Santa Fe, explore the Old Church Ruins, and savor fresh seafood by the sea. From Cebu City, take a bus from the North Bus Terminal to Hagnaya Port (approximately 4 hours). From Hagnaya Port, board a ferry to Santa Fe, Bantayan Island (about 1 hour). Bantayan Island can also be reached via direct flights from Mactan-Cebu International Airport to Bantayan Airport.

  2. Camotes Islands: Comprising four picturesque islands, the Camotes Islands offer a serene escape. Visit Lake Danao, an expansive freshwater lake on Pacijan Island, explore Bukilat Cave, and unwind on the unspoiled beaches of Santiago Bay. From Cebu City, head to Danao Port (about 1.5 hours by bus) and catch a ferry to Consuelo Port, Camotes (approximately 2 hours). Ferry schedules may vary, so it’s advisable to check ahead of time for the most up-to-date information.

  3. Malapascua Island: Renowned as a diving haven, Malapascua Island is famous for its thresher shark sightings. Beyond diving, enjoy the laid-back atmosphere, visit the stunning coral gardens of Gato Island, and relax on the pristine Bounty Beach. From Cebu City, take a bus to Maya Port (around 4 hours) and then a boat to Malapascua Island (about 30 minutes). Boats to Malapascua may have fixed schedules, especially during bad weather, so plan accordingly.

  4. Lapu-Lapu Shrine and Magellan’s Cross: Dive into Cebu’s history by visiting the Lapu-Lapu Shrine in Mactan, commemorating the heroism of Lapu-Lapu during the Battle of Mactan. Explore Magellan’s Cross in Cebu City, a symbol of the country’s conversion to Christianity.

  5. Sumilon Island: A secluded paradise, Sumilon Island offers clear turquoise waters and a marine sanctuary for snorkeling and diving. Enjoy the sandbar that changes shapes with the tides, hike to the island’s watchtower, and relish the tranquility of this hidden gem. Head to Oslob (around 3 hours by bus or car) and take a boat from Tan-awan to Sumilon Island (short boat ride). It is possible to combine Oslob and Sumilon Island in a day trip.

Exploring these additional destinations provides a well-rounded Cebu experience, and provides a compelling reason for me to return to Cebu.
